TERMplus - Main Features

Introduction

Who is the product for?

TERMplus is developed for companies marketing products that can only be sold with comprehensive documentation. For such companies it is not sufficient to have a first-rate product; first-class accompanying documentation is necessary as well. The language must be clear and distinct to avoid any misunderstanding. For that reason an unambiguous and consistent choice of words is essential.

TERMplus is a tool that helps companies ensure this quality. Furthermore, the user is able to enter synonyms used in other areas or by other companies.

Integrated into IT-configuration and production process

TERMplus is developed as a runtime version of the database system Microsoft ACCESS, and therefore it can easily be integrated into the IT-configuration already used in the company. The computer department does not receive an unknown blackbox, but a tool familiar to everyone.

It is possible to work with TERMplus together with Microsoft Word for Windows.

Ready for use on delivery

The user is not required to design and construct the tools best suited for his purposes; we have included the facilities known to be necessary for the company employees.

System requirements

Minimum a 486 PC with 30 MB free disc space and at least 16 MB RAM running on Windows 95 or latest version. However, we recommend a Pentium with 32 MB RAM. TERMplus is available as a runtime version of Microsoft Access in single or multi-user versions for use in networks or with MS SQL server.

Working method

A company's terminology work is about storing objects with the same characteristics under one concept. All information regarding this concept is stored as one "terminological unit". This unit is identified by means of a numerical code.

The most important information is:
  • a definition or explanation of the concept and
  • a term used for the concept.

  • As for entries, there are two things that you need to note:
  • Firstly, several entries are often used within the same concept.
  • Secondly, unambiguousness can only be ensured if you decide which of the possible entries you want to use.

  • Entries in TERMplus are entered into the field ENTRY. For each of the entries, information about the entry status is stored. That is, each entry is characterized in one of the following ways:

    Field:

    Description:

TERM The entry the company wants to use
SYNONYM Entry used in other areas
TRANSLATION PROPOSAL Translation proposal when an entry in the foreign language cannot be documented
DEPRECATED TERM Deprecated term, i.e. an entry is not to be used

    Multiple languages

Terminological databases consist of information in several languages. Also in TERMplus, it is possible to enter terms and other information in several languages. At the moment it is possible to work with Danish, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian. More languages can be added upon request.

However, one of the languages in the database must be agreed upon as "core language". Often this language is the user's mother tongue, but also the company language of an international company can be used as core language. Only by working with core languages is it possible to state precise information on equivalence.

When searching the system works with language pairs. The user chooses source and target language. This choice can be changed in the main menu any time.
